Pollination Collective
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, more than 75 percent of flowering plants and crops are pollinated by animals. When discussing pollinators bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds come to mind. However, more species participate in such efforts. Bats, birds, moths, flies, and beetles also contribute to pollination as they find food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has found that in the last 30+ years our nation's pollinators have suffered serious losses due to invasive species and diseases, exposure to pesticides and other chemicals, along with loss of habitats, loss of species, genetic diversity, and changing climate. In some areas more than 40% of invertebrate pollinator species – bees, moths, butterflies and more – are threatened with extinction. How might design influence people to make changes in their lives to help endangered pollinators?
Pollination Collective is a pop up shop that is initiating change for the protection of endangered pollinators. The shop has an educational side that engages the consumer with easy-to-understand information on pollinators, what they do, and how you can help. All of the shop revenue goes to conservation protection programs like the Xerces Society. The project components include a social media campaign, prints, seed packets, planters, shirts, tote bags, brochures, and postcards. The goal of this project is to give individuals the information they need to understand what is happening in the world around them and the actions needed in their day to day lives to protect pollinator species.
